This course is cross-listed with Linguistics LING 80G.

Students who have completed CMPS 101 cannot receive credit for this course.

The official textbook is Harley Hahn's Guide to Unix and Linux by (guess who?) Harley Hahn, McGraw-Hill, 2008. ISBN 0-07-313361-2 Osborne, 2007. ISBN 0-07-226336-9.
The Bay Tree Bookstore expects to have this in by Wed. April 9. Price about $80, hopefully slightly under.

An older alternative that is somewhat similar is Harley Hahn's Student Guide to Unix, 2nd Ed. by (guess who?) Harley Hahn, McGraw-Hill, 1996. ISBN 0-07-????.
This will not have Linux-specific material and will not have Mac OS/X-specific material. The new book has Chapter 6, The Unix Work Environment, which is apparently totally new material, and many other new features.
Amazon.com advertises many cheap used copies. I don't know if you can save on shipping by ordering several copies in one order (apparently not). The Bay Tree Bookstore will not stock it.

The official optional additional textbook is Unix: The Complete Reference, Second Ed. by Rosen et al. Osborne, 2007. ISBN 0-07-226336-9.

Another good book is Guide to Unix Using Linux by Palmer et al.

Another good book is A Practical Guide to the Unix system, Third Ed. by Sobell.

These and others are on reserve (2-hour) at the Science Library. There seem to be many used copies available, as well.

A problem with all these books (except Hahn's) is that they cover far more than most students will ever need. However, they are designed to be read; they are not just reference manuals, like the Nutshell series.
